Something about summer flowing by seems to make the days feel both lazy and speedy. A hot afternoon can drag on forever but then those lovely weekends in the mountains just fly by. Summer may never again feel as luxurious and never-ending as it did when I was 12, spending my days swimming in the neighbor’s pond and catching fire-flies at night, glowing brightly in my hands. Something about time speeding up as we get older … or maybe it’s just the frenetic pace of things these days.
All I know is that time does seem to slow down when I’m in my garden, with that deep aroma of freshly watered soil, the sound of bees buzzing and chickens clucking in the background, and the tender green shoots so easy on my eyes.
These are the moments I realize there is plenty of time — time to garden, time to make art, time to be with friends and family, time to lay on the ground and stare at clouds.
There’s even time to plant another grazing garden for my chickens or another round of cover crops, because the tender little plants in our seeds mixes only take about 30 days to mature.
This time of year, I like to sow Super Soil Builder Cover Crop Mix. It sprouts quickly and grows into a dense patch of organic matter that becomes vital nutrients when I till it back into the soil in about a month. And this leaves plenty of time to plant my Cool Weather Cover Crop Mix in the fall, getting it into the soil about four weeks before our first had frost.
Here’s a thought about gardening and time, which somehow captures this sweet midsummer moment:
Garden as though you will live forever.
