We’re celebrating the art of handmade pottery for the months of March and April in honor of Janette Harrell’s two-month artist residency at the prestigious Penland School of Crafts in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina.
Janette is the talent behind the lovely Sunrise Honey Pot and Sunrise Mugs, which she hand-crafts at her studio, Menefee Mountain Pottery, in Mancos, CO. We first spotted Janette’s pottery at the Cortez Farmers Market last summer… the smooth texture, delicate lines, and subtle glazes of her work were exactly the aesthetic we had in mind for a Home + Range line of handmade kitchenware. Janette has been great to share ideas and inspirations with and we love what is becoming the Sunrise series… honey pot, mug, and kitchen canisters added to the line this spring.
So, doing an artist residency at Penland is a big deal! Penland School of Crafts has been around since the 1920’s and has gained a reputation as one of the premier schools focusing on keeping studio crafts vital by “preserving its traditions and expanding its boundaries.”
Janette will be working with instructors and fellow artists from around the world, with the time to focus daily on her studio work, experimenting with new ideas and refining her skills. We’ll be getting updates on how things are going and will be sure to share the news. Can’t wait to see what lovely things she comes up with!
