We’ve been spending the spring hunkered down in the farmhouse kitchen, learning about Search Engine Optimization and working on a selection of new products to flesh out the “Range” side of our offerings – useful and fun items for your backyard garden or urban homestead. The SEO stuff… not so exciting but crucial to an online business. The new products… lots of fun to pull together and hopefully coming to homeandrange.com soon!
One that we’re having a lot of fun with and can’t wait to bring your way is the CHX MIX two-pack: Grazing Grains and Grazing Greens. These are custom seed mixes for growing grazing gardens for your backyard chicken flock… to supplement their feed, add extra nutrition to their diet and provide a food source they can scratch and peck to their heart’s content.
We thought it’d be fun to share how we’ve been going about putting this product together, a little behind the scenes from the Home and Range homestead.
First, we called up our friend Lindsay at Battlerock Farm to talk grazing greens and grazing grains. Lindsay has been growing both for her flock of 250 and had lots of great info on chicken grazing preferences and growing techniques to share.
Armed with good on-the-farm info, we stopped in next to talk to Robby at Southwest Seed, a source for all sorts of cover and forage crop seeds. Robby is a wealth of information on what crops grow well together, mature at similar times, and require the same growing conditions. She helped us put together the perfect Grazing Greens and Grazing Grains mixes, something that will work as well in a small backyard plot as it does on a larger farm field setting.
Meanwhile, back at Home and Range world headquarters, we sourced packaging…
And worked on labeling…
And thought through all the little details we’ll need to include in the directions and description.
We’re hoping in the next couple weeks to be able to put the seeds, packaging and labeling all together and get CHX MIX out to all those hungry backyard chickens! Happy scratching and pecking CHX!
